The controller of "Blackwing - Silverwind the Ascendant" does not choose when to apply its effect "Once, during the opponent's turn while you control this face-up card, a "Blackwing" monster(s) you control cannot be destroyed by battle.". The effect must be applied when a "Blackwing" monster would be destroyed by battle.

So:

During the Damage Step of the Battle Phase, the damage is calculated from the declared attack. If the defending monster is face-down, it is flipped face-up first during this Phase.

Situation:

I summon SIlverwind with Vayu, no effect, enemy Book of Moon it, then i end my phase.

Then my opponent attacks face-down Silverwind,

#Once, during the opponent's turn while you control this face-up card#

Can't activate Silverwind's effect? Nope.

Here's how it works.

Keyword:
The effect must be applied when a "Blackwing" monster would be destroyed by battle.

I'm using OCG's Damage Step substep, it doesn't differs much from TCG's but i think TCG's Substep is more precise and easier to be digested.

+Damage Step substeps+

Substep 1:

Start of the Damage Step, trigger monster effect such as grandmole activate during this step, when the monster is face-down and won't be flipped face-up.

So if Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke or grandmole etc attacked, end story. Silverwind is gone.

But the situation i saw is different, it's juz some normal monster that attacked, so the story goes on.

Substep 2:

Flipping the monster FACE-UP! If the monster being attacked is face-down, it is flipped face-up at this time. If the monster has a Flip Effect or a Trigger Effect that activates when it is flipped face-up, the effect will not activate at this time unless otherwise stated by the card text.

Nah... all this doesn't matters, what matters the most is SIlverwind is FACE-UP here.

Substep 3:

At the damage calculation, You can activate effects that activate at Damage Calculation, like "Injection Fairy Lily" or "Kinetic Soldier". This substep is equals to TCG's Before Damage Calculation's substep. Here's where player with Honest do some WEIRD stuff, will explain later but not now.

Substep 4:

Inflict battle damage, and decide whether the monster is destroyed by Battle.

Damage has already been calculated and the monsters have already considered to have battled. If a monster is removed from the field or has its ATK/DEF altered, then do not recalculate the damage.

Substep 5, 6 & 7 :

After damage calculation and immidiately after damage calculation.

Substep 7= Damage Result; Flip Effects; Destroyed by Battle. If the monster destroyed by battle has an effect that activates when it is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, its effect starts a Chain. THIS IS WHERE SILVERWIND WILL BE DESTROYED BY BATTLE.

Hmmmm......

The effect must be applied when a "Blackwing" monster would be destroyed by battle.

Since Silverwind is already flipped face-up at an earlier substep, IT IS FACE-UP ON THE FIELD. So it effect goes on and resolve, opponent may chain to its effect such as Divine Wrath.

Substep 8: At the End of the Damage Step

Dun bother, Silverwind is not going to the grave, skip~

Saw this situation at Kepong's 30-05-10 tourney.

Done explaining.
Silverwind is cool.

end,/./
